Genital prolapse/reconstructive urology

THE PELVIC ORGANS:

The organs present in the small female pelvis are maintained by a set of muscles and ligaments which constitute the pelvic floor.

This acts as a hammock on which the bladder, uterus and rectum rest. We speak of prolapse, an anomaly commonly called “organ descent”, when these organs are no longer supported and protrude to varying degrees into the vagina or even beyond the vulva if the prolapse is externalized.

It can affect the bladder (cystocele), the uterus (hysterocele) and the rectum (rectocele) alone or in combination.
